Eoin Morgan Supports Brendon McCullum for England’s White-Ball Head Coach Position
Eoin Morgan has expressed his strong endorsement for Brendon McCullum as the potential white-ball head coach for England, alongside his existing role as Test coach. Morgan praises McCullum as “one of the best coaches in the world.”
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the departure of Matthew Mott from the white-ball head coach position following England’s inability to defend their T20 World Cup title last month, resulting in a disappointing exit from the group stage and a heavy semi-final loss to India.
This shift comes after England’s lackluster performance in the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where they failed to advance beyond the group stage, surrendering their title to Australia.
Morgan stated, “In my eyes, he is one of the best coaches in the world. You can see what he did with the England Test team.” He emphasized the importance of making the head coach position attractive and that England needs someone with proven skills to lead the team towards winning World Cups and Champions trophies.
Under McCullum’s guidance, England’s Test team has revitalized their performance, achieving 17 victories out of 25 matches over the past two years, with a notable clean sweep against the West Indies.
Morgan highlighted the impactful transformation in the Test squad and urged the ECB to consider McCullum seriously for the white-ball role. “He is versatile and highly regarded, having significantly improved the England Test team,” said Morgan.
While Morgan has ruled himself out of contention for the head coach position, citing that “the timing is not right” for him personally, he remains committed to coaching in the future. Meanwhile, Jos Buttler will continue to lead the white-ball side amid scrutiny following England’s recent World Cup performances.
As England gears up for a multi-format white-ball series against Australia starting September 11, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will take over as interim coach for the remainder of the home summer.
England will face Sri Lanka in a three-Test series beginning August 21 at Old Trafford in Manchester, with the first ball scheduled for 11 AM.
