Residents of Enugu State participated in a nationwide anti-hardship and misgovernance protest on Thursday by observing a sit-at-home order.
Reports indicate that economic and social activities came to a standstill as roads were nearly deserted. By 10 a.m., shops, petrol stations, shopping malls, and event centers throughout the state capital were entirely closed.
Major markets, including Ogbete Main Market, New Market, Abakpa Market, and Emene Market, were open, yet completely void of shoppers. In shopping venues like ShopRite and SPAR Market, only security personnel were observed on the premises.
Okpara Square was heavily monitored, with soldiers and police officers stationed at the entrances, ensuring the area remained secure. The gates of Enugu State High Court were open, but only two security guards were present; the Federal High Court remained locked.
Local resident Chinasa Omeke expressed concerns over the prevailing atmosphere in Enugu, attributing the protest’s intensity to perceived threats from security agencies. “Our people are observing the protest through a sit-at-home to ensure safety. Recent events indicate that Nigerian security forces are waging war on citizens exercising their constitutional right to protest,” Omeke stated.
At the time of reporting, very few vehicles were seen on the roads, underscoring the significant impact of the protest.
