ECNETNews, Santo Domingo, August 2, 2024: In a significant development for international travel, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez and Dominican Republic Minister of Tourism David Collado formalized an Open Skies Agreement today at the National Palace in Santo Domingo. This pivotal agreement aims to bolster bilateral aviation cooperation between the two nations.
The agreement, expected to take effect following the completion of necessary internal procedures, will modernize civil aviation standards between the United States and the Dominican Republic.
According to U.S. officials, “This Agreement with the Dominican Republic will strengthen our robust economic and commercial ties, enhance people-to-people interactions, and generate new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers. Airlines will have the ability to offer more affordable, convenient, and efficient services, thereby promoting tourism and commerce. Furthermore, both governments are committed to upholding high standards of aviation safety and security.”
This new pact builds on a network of U.S. Open Skies agreements with over 135 partners, allowing U.S. airlines to expand their flight networks internationally, linking the U.S. economy to emerging markets.
The conclusion of this agreement comes after two years of negotiations, with key advocacy from U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat, who actively supported its finalization through various congressional initiatives and high-level discussions aimed at benefiting Dominican American families, visitors, and American tourists.
Congressman Espaillat remarked, “Today’s Open Skies Agreement between the United States and Dominican Republic marks a significant victory for both nations. This pro-consumer agreement will lead to more flight options, lower fares, increased travel, and stimulate economic growth. Most importantly, it provides Dominican American families and tourists with affordable travel options to reunite with loved ones. This agreement symbolizes a strengthened bond between the United States and the Dominican Republic that we will continue to enhance moving forward.”
Historically, Dominican American families have faced challenges with limited flight routes and elevated fares to and from the Dominican Republic, particularly during peak travel times. The implementation of this modern Open Skies Agreement promises to benefit consumers and tourists with reduced flight costs, a broader selection of routes, and enhanced airline services. This landmark agreement is poised to invigorate the tourism sector and stimulate job creation in both nations.
