MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – In a bold move to combat auto theft and organized crime, the Ontario government has announced a significant investment of $134 million for the procurement of five new police helicopters. These advanced helicopters will serve the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa, equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to enhance safety on highways and roads by addressing violent carjackings, auto theft, street racing, and impaired driving.
“Our government is committed to equipping police services with the necessary resources to effectively combat auto theft and car-related crimes,” said Premier Doug Ford. “By leveraging innovative technologies and implementing strategic policing initiatives, we will tackle the challenges posed by guns and gangs and strengthen law enforcement presence to keep our communities secure.”
The newly established Joint Air Support Unit will see the Ontario Provincial Police acquire two H135 helicopters, which will provide essential support to both Ottawa and Toronto Police Services. Additionally, three helicopters will be procured for use by Durham, Halton, and Peel Regional Police Services, enhancing current patrols and improving response times.
“Criminal networks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but so are we,” stated Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “With a car stolen every 14 minutes in Ontario, these helicopters will be vital in allowing police to stay ahead of those committing crimes and stealing vehicles from our neighborhoods.”
This investment in law enforcement aviation was highlighted in the 2024 Ontario Budget and builds on previous funding of $51 million directed towards the OPP’s Provincial Auto Theft and Towing Team as well as Ontario’s Major Auto Theft Prosecution Response Team.
“We are directly investing in the safety and wellbeing of Ontario families, ensuring they feel secure in their homes and communities,” emphasized Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy. “With these five new helicopters patrolling our roads and neighborhoods, we send a strong message that crimes threatening public safety will not be tolerated.”
The 2024 Budget: Building a Better Ontario underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public safety by providing police services with the necessary resources to effectively respond to major incidents and urgent situations.
