English Teacher has been awarded the prestigious Mercury Prize, recognizing the top British or Irish album of the year, for their album This Could Be Texas. The Leeds-based band triumphed over notable contenders including Charli XCX, Beth Gibbons, and Corinne Bailey Rae. In a historic first for the 32-year-old award, there was no public ceremony held this year due to a lack of sponsorship. Judges lauded the album for its surrealism, insightful social commentary, and innovative musical composition. The band is taking home a prize of £25,000, approximately $33,000.
Last year’s Mercury Prize accolade went to Ezra Collective, marking a significant moment as the first jazz act to secure the award.
