Emiliano Grillo delighted fans at the WM Phoenix Open with a stunning hole-in-one on the legendary 16th hole, igniting a wave of excitement as Thomas Detry established a two-stroke lead in the second round.
Grillo’s remarkable 155-yard ace saw the ball dance around the cup before finally taking the plunge. The Argentinian celebrated by racing around the tee box, sharing the joyous moment with his caddie and fellow competitors Rafael Campos and Seamus Power.
Fans exploded with enthusiasm, showering the area with drinks in celebration after witnessing the first hole-in-one at this iconic hole since the 2022 tournament, when Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz also achieved the feat.
Grillo’s ace came during a solid two-under 69 round, bringing his total to even par for the tournament, just making it past the cut line.
### Detry Dominates in Phoenix with Impressive Seven-Under Round
As the leader, Thomas Detry narrowly missed an ace of his own, landing just two feet from the hole before sinking a birdie. Detry’s impressive performance included eight birdies on his way to a seven-under score, highlighting a stellar run with three consecutive birdies starting from the ninth hole. He concluded the round with two more birdies, finishing at 12 under for the event.
Alex Smalley and Michael Kim are tied for second at 10 under, closely followed by Tom Kim, Jordan Spieth, who eagled holes 13 and 15, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, just one stroke behind.
Justin Thomas is part of a five-player group at eight under, leading the charge ahead of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who carded a flawless five-under 66 in the round. After a brief hiatus due to a hand injury, Scheffler returned to the course last week at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, an event that saw Rory McIlroy claim victory.
