As the turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has urged the factional acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, to restore the previous leadership structure.
Emerging reports indicate that the PDP Governors Forum is convening an emergency meeting on Monday to address critical concerns regarding the party’s future direction. Sources reveal that PDP stakeholders are contemplating the formation of a caretaker committee to facilitate the organization of a National Convention aimed at electing a new National Working Committee.
Following his appointment as acting National Chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s removal, Damagum has faced mounting criticism from party leaders regarding the ongoing crisis, sparking calls for his resignation.
Damagum’s indecisive leadership has exacerbated political tensions, particularly in Rivers State, amidst escalating conflict between Governor Sim Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike.
In a recent turn of events, Damagum’s faction announced the suspension of National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade for alleged disloyalty to the party. In response, Ologunagba’s statement declared that Damagum and National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu were suspended for similar disloyalty, with Yayari Ahmed Mohammed now serving as the acting National Chairman.
During discussions between Governor Mohammed and Damagum’s faction, the Governor called for unity and urged the restoration of the party’s previous status to ensure stability and allow the National Executive Committee (NEC) to address ongoing issues effectively.
Reports indicate that in light of the upcoming PDP 99th National Executive Committee meeting on October 24th, party members are advocating for significant reforms to realign the PDP. Eddy Olafeso, former National Vice Chairman for the South-West, emphasized the need for shared commitment among members to secure the party’s future.
In a related statement, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor expressed hope for a moment of truth during the NEC meeting, expecting unity and resolution of leadership challenges within the party. He believe that discussions will lead to effective solutions and restore harmony within the PDP.
As the PDP navigates through this challenging period, the upcoming NEC meeting is viewed as a critical opportunity for party members to collectively forge a path toward stability and unity.
