This week, users on X encountered a notable new setting within the platform’s Settings menu.
The setting states, “Allow your posts as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning.” This feature is linked to Grok, X’s AI chatbot that the platform is increasingly integrating into its services.
The additional information under the setting indicates that user data will be utilized to “continuously improve your experience” on X while also being shared with xAI, the AI company behind Grok.
X users are informed about their data usage, and they have the option to decide whether to share data for AI training, which is a positive step.
However, it is concerning that X defaults users to opt-in, and many had to discover these options independently.
How to Opt Out of X’s AI Training
If you wish to prevent X from using your data for AI training, follow these steps. (Note: This option appears to be available only on the web version of X, not on mobile apps.)
-
Select the Settings and Privacy option from the left-hand sidebar menu.
-
Navigate to the Privacy and Safety tab within the Settings menu.
-
Scroll down to the Data sharing and personalization section and click on the Grok option.
-
You will see the setting “Allow your posts as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok to be used for training and fine-tuning,” with a checkmark box enabled. Click the checkmark to deselect and opt out.
Additionally, there is an option to delete your conversation history with Grok, the AI chatbot.
As Musk plans significant investments in xAI, potential users should consider these steps if they prefer not to have their data utilized in AI development.
