The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Food and Cultural Festival is set to take place in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria from October 6 to 11, 2024. The festival aims to promote food security, alleviate poverty, and eradicate hunger across 16 ECOWAS countries.
Ambassador Felix Ihonre, the Director-General, emphasized the festival’s potential to unite key stakeholders in the agricultural sector to address the security challenges that affect farming and production within the region.
“The festival is a significant opportunity for Nigeria, as the host nation, to experience considerable economic gains,” Ihonre stated, highlighting that local businesses, including hospitality and transport services, would thrive during the event.
With Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu also serving as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, there is a unique opportunity for the country to leverage this festival for broader benefits.
The festival will not only welcome delegates from 15 ECOWAS member countries but also international dignitaries, heads of state, and government representatives, fostering global ties.
Activities planned for the festival include a golf tournament, a train carnival, and the Miss ECOWAS Beauty Pageant, all designed to celebrate and showcase the richness of African culture.
The theme for this year’s festival, “Celebrating African Cultural Heritage for Peace and Development,” underscores the necessity for a peaceful environment in ensuring agricultural productivity and community development.
The commitment of security organizations such as the police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps will play a pivotal role in ensuring a safe and successful event.
Looking ahead, the festival is expected to initiate follow-up projects aimed at establishing a cultural and food revolution in the region, ensuring lasting benefits beyond the event itself. Stakeholders remain urged to collaborate effectively for the festival’s success.
