ECNETNews, New York, NY, September 27, 2024: Dwayne Bravo, a legendary name in T20 cricket, has officially announced his retirement from all forms of the sport following an injury-plagued Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season. The 40-year-old West Indian all-rounder, revered as the highest wicket-taker in T20 history, concludes an illustrious 18-year career.
Bravo had previously retired from international cricket in 2021 and the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022, subsequently shifting his focus to coaching roles. In the past year, he has undertaken coaching responsibilities with the Chennai Super Kings and the Afghanistan men’s team.
In a heartfelt statement shared online, Bravo expressed his retirement decision. “My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain and strain,” he stated. “I can’t risk letting down my teammates, my fans, or the teams I represent. With a heavy heart, I officially announce my retirement from the sport. Today, the Champion bids farewell.”
Bravo’s career is highlighted by significant achievements, including victories in major T20 leagues such as the IPL, Pakistan Super League (PSL), and Big Bash League (BBL). He played a crucial role in West Indies’ T20 World Cup successes in 2012 and 2016.
Retiring with an impressive total of 631 wickets across 582 T20 matches, Bravo ranks just behind fellow West Indian Kieron Pollard in total appearances. His final CPL season ended prematurely due to a groin injury sustained during a match against the St. Lucia Kings in Tarouba.
Bravo was expected to compete in the UAE’s ILT20 with MI Emirates but opted to end his remarkable career instead. He leaves the sport as the most accomplished player in CPL history, securing five titles, including three with the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR). Bravo led TKR to back-to-back championships in 2017 and 2018 and guided the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots to their inaugural CPL title in 2021.
