The Nigerian Shippers Council has announced that the Kaduna dry port has successfully received and cleared over 500 containers of goods in the last three months. This significant achievement was confirmed by the Director of the Kaduna Port Office during a maritime industry sensitization event held at the 46th Kaduna International Trade Fair.
The Kaduna dry port plays a vital role as a designated port of origin and destination for cargo, enhancing both export and import activities that connect Kaduna to global markets. This development not only improves trade access but also stimulates economic growth in the region.
In his address, the Director emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to enhancing railway operations, which will further boost activities at the dry port and increase overall cargo capacity. He noted that high logistics costs present a substantial hurdle for businesses, and improving railway efficiency is anticipated to significantly lower these expenses.
“Local goods will flow seamlessly between Lagos and Kaduna. With enhanced railway services, we expect container deliveries in Kaduna to exceed 1,000 within the same timeframe,” he stated.
The sensitization session aimed to inform stakeholders about the Council’s crucial role in facilitating trade. The Nigerian Shippers Council is dedicated to promoting the maritime industry and creating favorable business conditions for all participants, focusing on the ease of doing business to support import-export activities.
Furthermore, the Council has been establishing dry ports in inland regions lacking direct sea access, stimulating trade and supporting regional economic development. Plans are underway to establish additional dry ports across the nation to provide viable alternatives to conventional seaports.
Highlighting the importance of dry ports as essential infrastructure for transporting goods and creating alternative trade routes, the Director mentioned the establishment of Border Information Centres in various locations, including Idi Roko, Jibia, and Illela. These centres serve to provide crucial information and assistance to shippers navigating international trade complexities.
The Council offers its services free of charge to enhance shipping efficiency and encourages shippers to utilize its resources wisely. The Director also warned about the prevalence of online scams, urging shippers to take advantage of the Council’s open-door policy.
The Nigerian Shippers Council remains steadfast in its mission to protect shippers’ interests and ensure fairness within the shipping industry.
