SANTA FE, N.M. — A reckless driver was taken into custody following a police-involved shooting on Sunday in Santa Fe, leading to the cancellation of the Desfile de la Gente parade.
The incident unfolded near downtown Santa Fe Plaza around 10:30 a.m., just hours before the parade was set to begin at 1 p.m. The identity and age of the suspect have not been disclosed as of Sunday afternoon.
Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber reported that an individual was crashing into vehicles and confronting law enforcement, culminating in a police chase. “Unfortunately, he successfully ruined the day for everybody else,” the mayor stated.
In a statement, New Mexico State Police confirmed that the shooting involved both the Santa Fe Police Department and the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. Fortunately, officers did not sustain injuries, but the suspect was wounded during the incident.
Witness Dan Shipp described the scene, noting that he observed a white pickup truck making erratic maneuvers before crossing through a barricade. He reported hearing “six or seven shots” but could not determine the source of the gunfire.
As the situation unfolded, hundreds of people had gathered at the plaza to prepare for the parade, which is designed to offer fun, relaxation, and cultural enjoyment for residents and visitors alike. However, Shipp remarked that all activities at the plaza were halted in light of the incident, marking a significant disruption to the festivities planned for the day.
