A serious incident occurred on Saturday in the Epe area of Lagos State when a driver allegedly under the influence of alcohol struck two pedestrians near Mayfair Garden, resulting in severe injuries.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that its operatives promptly attended to the scene, rescuing the injured individuals. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed that the accident took place around 6:30 AM and involved a Toyota Camry and a commercial LT Bus.
Giwa stated that the two pedestrians suffered significant fractures in their legs and arms and were rushed to Akodo General Hospital for medical attention. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Toyota Camry lost control while allegedly intoxicated, colliding with the pedestrians as they attempted to cross the Lekki-Epe Expressway with their belongings. The vehicle continued at high speed before crashing into the bus that was discharging passengers at a nearby stop.
In response to the incident, LASTMA’s monitoring team ensured the injured were safely transported and subsequently arrested the driver of the Toyota Camry along with two passengers. They were handed over to officers at the Elemoro Police Station for further investigation.
Giwa underscored the urgency of promoting road safety and urged all drivers, particularly those operating commercial vehicles, to exercise caution and avoid drinking while driving.
