Lawyers representing Drake have clarified that a recent complaint centers solely on Universal Music Group (UMG) and not on the artist behind the song “Not Like Us.” They emphasize that UMG knowingly published and profited from false and harmful allegations. The legal representatives state unequivocally, “Drake is not a pedophile. He has never engaged in sexual relations with a minor and has no criminal charges or convictions.”
In response to the lawsuit, a spokesperson for UMG asserted that the claims are baseless and highlighted the absurdity of suggesting they would damage an artist’s reputation. “We have invested significantly in Drake’s career and have worked diligently to support his historic success both commercially and financially,” the spokesperson stated.
The spokesperson further noted that Drake has collaborated with UMG to share his music and engage in dynamic “rap battles” as a form of artistic expression. They accuse Drake of using legal channels to stifle creative freedom and profit from a song in question.
“We do not engage in defamation against anyone,” the statement continued. “We will staunchly defend our team and our reputation, as well as safeguard any artist from unfounded legal actions arising simply from their creative work.”
The lawsuit claims that UMG orchestrated a targeted promotional strategy for the single, including its artwork and music video, recognizing the sensational nature of the allegations as commercially advantageous. Drake’s legal team argues that UMG launched a “successful” campaign, highlighting UMG’s role in securing Kendrick Lamar as the halftime performer for Super Bowl LVI and promoting “Not Like Us” for the 2025 Grammy Awards, where it received five nominations.
While detailing conventional promotional efforts such as marketing and licensing, the lawsuit also accuses UMG of collaborating with undisclosed entities to manipulate streaming numbers on platforms. Additionally, it alleges that UMG provided financial incentives to third parties to enhance the single’s visibility.
