KINGSTON, Jamaica – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Horace Chang, emphasized the ongoing investments in Montego Bay by government and private sector stakeholders that are paving the way for the city’s long-term stability and growth. He highlighted notable developments in infrastructure, tourism, and business operations during the Montego Bay Free Zone’s (MBFZ) 40th Anniversary Client Awards Ceremony held on March 27.
Dr. Chang stated, “The investments directed into Montego Bay create the foundation for continued growth and development.” He elaborated on the construction of the Montego Bay Perimeter Road, which is set to significantly enhance transportation and economic accessibility within the region.
This planned four-lane highway will begin at a grade-separated intersection along the new Long Hill bypass currently under construction, with a vision to extend towards Hopewell and Lucea in Hanover, improving critical connectivity across the western region.
“Investment continues to flow into Sangster International Airport,” Dr. Chang noted, highlighting the ongoing enhancements to the city’s infrastructure, healthcare, entertainment, and business services.
As he congratulated MBFZ on four decades of operation, Dr. Chang urged the organization to continue driving transformation through innovation. He expressed hope that young entrepreneurs would bring forth new ideas in the MBFZ space over the next 40 years.
Marlene Malahoo Forte, Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs and MP for St. James West Central, commended the resilience of businesses within the zone, particularly for their perseverance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As Montego Freeport celebrates these 40 years, I commend all of you who have been part of this journey. You have built a legacy that future generations will inherit,” Malahoo Forte remarked, wishing prosperity to all who do business, invest, and work in the area.
Sancia Bennett Templer, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, urged potential investors to capitalize on the opportunities provided by Jamaica’s special economic zone regime. She stressed the significance of sustainable, inclusive, and technologically advanced business models, advocating for investments that will ensure the MBFZ remains a crucial engine for economic growth in the years ahead.
The ceremony celebrated long-standing businesses and dedicated employees whose contributions have played a vital role in the Free Zone’s impressive success over the past 40 years.
