On October 5, 2024, National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah and Hurriyat Conference Chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed their optimism regarding Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s forthcoming visit to Pakistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting.
Dr. Abdullah emphasized the importance of dialogue, stating, “I hope they [India and Pakistan] will address all issues, including economic concerns. It is crucial for friendly discussions to enhance understanding between our nations. We must work towards eliminating animosities and fostering better relations.”
The NC leader’s remarks come in light of Dr. Jaishankar’s focus on multilateral discussions during his visit, as he noted, “The emphasis will be on the multilateral event rather than India-Pakistan relations.”
Since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status by the central government in 2019, diplomatic and trade ties between India and Pakistan have significantly deteriorated.
Dr. Abdullah stressed the need for both countries to adopt a friendly approach, stating, “War is not the solution if we aim to preserve the world. Success through dialogue is essential.”
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also echoed feelings of hope regarding the Minister’s visit, asserting, “Despite the heightened challenges, our commitment to a peaceful resolution remains steadfast. The ongoing uncertainty has affected generations of Kashmiris, and we seek an end to this situation. The upcoming SCO summit represents a crucial opportunity for India and Pakistan to engage constructively.”
He remarked on the tumultuous changes faced by Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, noting, “The region has endured significant setbacks, including the loss of its semi-autonomous status and a period of severe restrictions. I return here with the same hope for peace and justice for the people of Jammu and Kashmir that I have always nurtured.”
