Former President Donald Trump is reported safe after gunshots were fired in his vicinity during an incident at his Florida golf club on Sunday. According to law enforcement sources, Secret Service agents observed a man aiming a rifle at the golf course where Trump was believed to be present.
In the ensuing chaos, agents discharged their weapons at the suspect, who attempted to flee the scene. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is now in custody and a firearm has been recovered.
In communication with his supporters, Trump reassured them that he is “safe and well” following the alarming event. “Nothing will slow me down,” he emphasized, adding, “I will never surrender!”
This incident occurs nearly two months after a gunman targeted Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he suffered injuries from gunfire.
The Secret Service acknowledged a “protective incident” involving Trump that unfolded shortly before 2 PM EST on Sunday. The White House confirmed that both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation, noting their relief at Trump’s safety.
Harris expressed her sentiments on social media, stating, “Violence has no place in America,” following her update on the matter.
This recent episode raises concerns about security protocols, especially considering the scrutiny the Secret Service faced after the July incident in Pennsylvania, where a gunman shot at Trump during a rally, resulting in one fatality. Former agency director Kimberly Cheatle resigned shortly thereafter, following public outcry over the agency’s handling of security for the former president.
