Dominica International Airport Emerges as a Key Caribbean Hub Amid Significant Onsite Progress
The Dominica International Airport is rapidly progressing towards becoming a major hub in the Caribbean, with impressive advancements reported at the construction site.
This ambitious project is financed through Dominica’s Citizenship by Investment Programme and is strategically located on the picturesque northeast coast, between Woodford Hill and Wesley. The development is being managed by Montreal Management Consultants Development, with China Railway No. 5 leading the construction efforts.
Once completed, the Dominica International Airport will boast a 2,850-meter runway, designed to accommodate widebody aircraft, thereby enabling direct flights to key destinations in North America, Europe, and Asia. Additional features will include a modern terminal, state-of-the-art air traffic control systems, a central substation, a health centre, and extensive cargo handling capabilities, all built to comply with international safety and efficiency standards.
Recent updates reveal substantial progress in foundational work, including backfilling, dynamic compaction at the culverts, and ongoing earthworks and stone excavation within the terminal area. These foundational activities are crucial for establishing the airport’s infrastructure.
The new airport is set to revolutionize Dominica’s economy by boosting tourism and enhancing trade connections.
Samuel Johnson, CEO of the International Airport Development Company, acknowledged the importance of accessibility, stating, “While Dominica boasts outstanding attractions, the ease of access remains a challenge. Travelers often choose more accessible islands within the region. This development is expected to significantly enhance various sectors of our economy.”
The $1 billion XCD megaproject has already created numerous job opportunities, providing a considerable boost to the island’s economic growth.
