In a significant development for housing and urban renewal, Minister for Housing and Urban Development has revealed that 172 beneficiaries have successfully secured land ownership papers as part of the ongoing Housing Recovery Project (HRP).
This announcement was made during a ceremonial event held at the State House Conference Centre, where 60 families received keys to their newly constructed homes.
“According to our construction metrics, we have achieved 83 percent of our target,” the Minister stated, highlighting the progress of the project. “To date, 172 beneficiaries are now landowners thanks to this initiative.”
Emphasizing the emotional impact on families who have endured years of hardship, she noted that acquiring land and homes represents a pivotal milestone that secures their futures.
The properties awarded to these families were previously damaged in the catastrophic Hurricane Maria, which struck the nation in 2017.
“What can we offer to a single mother striving to rebuild after losing her home? Or to a retired farmer who can no longer work? Should we send them to the bank, fully aware they may face rejection?” the Minister questioned.
The project has seen the completion of 285 homes thus far, with 67 additional homes currently under construction and 27 nearing completion in the upcoming months.
“This initiative encompasses more than just rebuilding homes; it’s about revitalizing lives,” the Minister asserted.
Additionally, she acknowledged the extensive impact of Hurricane Maria on the Kalinago Territory and northeastern regions, asserting that significant investments have been made in these areas through the Housing Recovery Project, with 90 homes already delivered in the Kalinago Territory.
Finance Minister, representing the Prime Minister, emphasized the government’s strong commitment to the welfare of the Dominican people and its dedication to building a resilient nation where all can thrive.
“As we gather here, I am filled with immense pride as we commemorate another pivotal achievement in our mission to provide modern, resilient housing for our citizens,” he remarked.
He added, “Today, we hand over keys that symbolize dignity, security, and opportunity, particularly meaningful as we approach the Christmas season—the beginning of a new chapter for these families.”
He emphasized that a home is not just a structure, but a sanctuary where families unite, children thrive, and aspirations are fulfilled.
“Housing is a fundamental human necessity, and delivering it is central to our goal of nurturing social and economic development throughout Dominica,” he stated. “The handover of homes to 60 deserving families is yet another success in our long-term housing strategy.”
The Finance Minister concluded that the government’s housing initiatives have not only strengthened communities but have also empowered families, contributing to the overarching vision of sustainable development in Dominica.
