We now have intriguing new details about Destiny 2’s upcoming expansion, Codename: Apollo. Bungie has unveiled concept art and revealed inspirations behind the expansion, drawing from sources such as 1960s music and notable literary works.
During a recent developer livestream, Bungie shed light on Codename: Frontiers, the next phase of Destiny 2’s content, set to launch in Summer 2025. Alongside discussions about Episode: Revenant—scheduled to begin on October 8—narrative director Alison Luhrs presented new concept art and shared cryptic insights about the storyline.
The upcoming year of content, which will commence after the conclusion of the current episode, Heresy, is designed to introduce two major expansions rather than the traditional single massive release. These expansions are expected to be smaller in scale but will arrive at a more frequent pace, reminiscent of the original Destiny’s Rise of Iron. The first expansion, Codename: Apollo, will feature a nonlinear campaign that embraces a metroidvania-style gameplay approach, allowing players to chart their own course as they unlock new abilities.
While specific details about Apollo’s new destination remain under wraps, Luhrs hinted at a theme of discovery, likening the experience to uncovering hidden secrets in a mansion setting. This alludes to players encountering objects of significance only after they recognize their importance.
The revealed concept art hints at a rich and mysterious environment. One piece suggests a gathering that involves an enigmatic ritual, complete with blue energy. The background of this artwork appears to reference the Cosmodrome location, potentially indicating that the new destination could be a concealed area on Earth.
Another piece shows an underground cave-like location filled with rock formations and staircases, further supporting theories of hidden places on Earth inhabited by previously unknown entities.
Bungie has also teased core inspirations for Apollo, including music from the 1960s and the literary work Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, a narrative that explores themes of time and multiple realities. Additionally, the animated series Scavenger’s Reign was mentioned, noted for its depiction of the peculiarities of an alien landscape.
With time travel being a significant aspect of Destiny 2’s lore, especially following the narrative arcs in The Witch Queen expansion, the introduction of Codename: Apollo opens the door to countless possibilities. As Bungie embarks on a new chapter following the conclusion of the Light and Darkness Saga, players can expect an adventurous and unpredictable journey ahead in Destiny 2.
