Derby County’s Kira Rai aims to inspire the next generation as she approaches her 100th appearance for the club. The talented striker, who netted Derby’s first goal of the 2024/25 season during an away match against Sporting Khalsa, holds the record for the longest streak of appearances for a single club among British South Asian players in the top three divisions of English women’s football.
A proud product of the Derby County academy, Rai’s landmark match is set to take place at home against Loughborough Lightning in the League Cup on Wednesday night.
“I’m incredibly proud, and my family shares this pride. This is also a significant moment for the football club,” Rai stated.
“Having spent most of my life here, I’ve built lifelong friendships and had a positive experience in football, largely thanks to my teammates and everyone involved in girls’ and women’s football in Derby.”
Wearing the No. 15 jersey, Rai played a crucial role in last season’s finale, helping Derby secure their first national trophy. She has been with the club since joining as an U10 player.
Reflecting on her achievements, Rai expressed her hope that her success could encourage greater diversity in women’s football. “I’m proud to be recognized as someone laying the groundwork for future players,” she added.
Rai concluded, “I relish the responsibility to foster and develop the sport. It’s an honor if others draw inspiration from my journey. Winning the National Plate was a standout moment, but I remain dedicated to contributing positively both on and off the pitch.”
