The Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Denzil Douglas, recently took to his social media account to applaud Clarice Cotton and Vanta Walters for their achievement of featuring in the Social media posts of the OAS (Organization of American States). The Minister of Foreign Affairs shared his excitement that the international organization acknowledged the two educators of St Kitts and Nevis.
Dr Denzil Douglas noted that the Organization of American States is currently celebrating the VI Inter-American Week of People of African Descent in the Americas. Under this initiative, the organization acknowledges people of African descent through various activities. Among these activities, the OAS profiles transformative education advocates from across the Americas who have excelled in their national or regional contributions.
As per the update shared by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Denzil Douglas, The theme of the celebration of the Week is “Fighting Slavery’s Legacy of Racism through Transformative Education in the Americas”.
Two nationals of St Kitts and Nevis, who have contributed immensely to the country’s development, got the chance to feature under the initiative. The Organization of American States applauded the two educators through the social media post. Dr Denzil Douglas social media post also featured congratulatory messages from all the social media users.
The first person on the list is Clarice Cotton. She is an educator with over five decades of experience in imparting education. During her decades-long career,, she radically transformed the lives of children and adults with special needs in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Meanwhile, the other national of St Kitts and Nevis, Vanta Walters is featured on the social media profile of OAS as an educator with over four decades of experience. During her years of service to the various generations of students in the country, she brought significant transformation to early childhood development in the country.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable Natalio Wheatley has stated that the proclamation of June 1 as Virgin Islands Day in the city of Tamarac, Florida will deepen relations and has potential for educational and cultural cooperation, and strong bonds of friendship.
Premier Wheatley said, “This initiative signifies the convergence of national interests. It will also have overall positive implications for the strengthening of economic ties between the state of Florida and the Virgin Islands, and allow for the advancement of tourism opportunities for the Territory.”
The proclamation was signed by Commissioner Morey Wright Jr., who is of Virgin Islands heritage and by Mayor of the city of Tamarac, Michelle Gomez.
The proclamation states, “Whereas the Virgin Islands have for centuries, settled in the region of South Florida and contribute to the society serving in various roles, including the hospitality industry, and whereas on June 1, 2023, the first direct commercial flight between the United States will commence and service and serve to deepen ties with the United States and the state of Florida.”
As a token of appreciation and friendship, Mr. Wright Jr. was gifted a framed photograph depicting the American Airlines plane flying directly over his former residence in The Sound, East End, Tortola. This presentation was made by Premier Wheatley and Minister for Communications and Works, Kye Rymer, on behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands.
Premier Wheatley also reported that the delegation was gifted the keys to Broward County presented by Commissioner Hazelle Rogers which he described as a humbling experience and a great honour for the people of the Virgin Islands.
The Premier explained that the offering of the keys was symbolic of the access being granted to the people of the Virgin Islands and opportunities for more strategic collaboration.
The event was attended by numerous members of the Virgin Islands diaspora who gathered to celebrate the occasion, as well as to congratulate and speak to Government officials who were in attendance.
“These persons are making significant contributions in Florida across the public and private sectors and several of them are in leadership positions, a testament that the Virgin Islands’ people are beacons of light everywhere we go,” Premier Wheatley said.
The event was hosted on May 31 at Island SPACE, a pan-Caribbean museum which is the first and only brick and mortar pan-Caribbean museum of its kind.
Dr. Wheatley said that the Virgin Islands was invited to contribute artefacts to be displayed at the museum.
Against the backdrop of the recently concluded International Museum Week observed in the Virgin Islands, the Premier said that the Island SPACE served as an inspiration to fully capitalise on preserving cultural heritage in the Territory through museums.
Tamarac is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 71,897. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people in 2015.

Forecasters are keeping an eye on four tropical waves, though, and two of the waves are in the Caribbean.

Tropical Wave 1: A tropical wave is located southwest of Cabo Verde. It’s moving west at 18 mph. Exact location: between 28W and 35W and from 02N to 09N.
Tropical Wave 2: Another tropical wave is located north of French Guiana. It’s moving west at 18 mph. Exact location: between 50W and 56W and from 05N to 09N.
Tropical Wave 3: A tropical wave in the Caribbean Sea is located north of Venezuela and south of the Dominican Republic. It’s moving west at 13 mph. Exact location: 70W and extending south from 13N.
Tropical Wave 4: A second tropical wave in the Caribbean is located east of Nicaragua. It’s moving west at 11 mph. Exact location: 82W and extending south from 14N.

PM Terrance drew and US Vice President Kamala Harris at US-Caribbean Leaders’ meeting
The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, recently attended the US-Caribbean meeting on Thursday, June 8, 2023. The Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris, chaired the meeting of the US and Caribbean. During the meeting, Kamala Harris spoke to the attending members about the significance of the Caribbean-US relationship and their collaboration of efforts on the issue of climate change.
The meeting provided a thorough dialogue between the Caribbean Leaders and the US Vice President. PM Dr Drew was accompanied by the Minister of Energy and Public Utilities, et al Konris Maynard and a delegation of ministers. The one day meeting took place on Thursday, June 8, 2023. Here, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered the opening remarks on the beginning of the meeting.

She stated that fostering the relationship between India and Dominica is a priority for her and the President of the United States. Accordingly, he stated that these meetings will play an important role in ensuring strength of these relationships. During the meeting, Vice President announced several new initiatives favouring the Caribbean region.
She announced more than US$100 million in new assistance for the Caribbean region, Vice President Harris also announced the U.S.–Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030 (PACC 2030). Additionally, she expanded upon the need to increase diplomatic presence of the US within the Eastern Caribbean. In her opening remarks, she spoke about the crisis in Haiti and the issue of firearms trafficking within the region.
The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew was accompanied by a delegation of high ranking government officials and Minister Konris Maynard. Other caribbean leaders in attendance at the U.S.-Caribbean Leaders Meeting in Nassau, The Bahamas included Andrew Holness, The Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit and Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew.

The United States Vice President committed to partnering with the Caribbean to combat climate crisis. She clarified that they will reach out to the World Bank stating that it should be an important part of their mission to work towards combattig climate crisis. Accordingly, she stated that new debt must include disaster clauses. This would allow a pause on debt payments immediately following a natural disaster.
She believes that implementing these works will impact the developmental initiatives of the caribbean significantly. Further, she pledged to extend the support of the US in curbing the illegal smuggling and supply of firearms within the caribbean. The authorities would stop illegal shipments of firearms, ammunitions and more and hold the traffickers accountable
