The Delhi High Court has directed yoga guru Baba Ramdev to remove specific “offensive” social media posts related to “Coronil,” a product claimed to treat Covid-19. The ruling, issued on July 29, follows a plea from several doctors’ associations concerned about misrepresentations of the product’s efficacy.
Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani stated, “I am allowing” the patients’ request for the removal of the controversial posts, granting a three-day deadline for compliance. Should Ramdev fail to adhere to this order, the court indicated that the content would be removed by the relevant microblogging platform.
A copy of the court’s order is currently pending release.
This legal action is part of a 2021 lawsuit filed by doctors’ associations against Ramdev, his associate Acharya Balkrishna, and Patanjali Ayurveda. Justice Bhambhani had reserved the decision on May 21 after considering arguments from both sides.
The lawsuit contends that Ramdev had made “unsubstantiated claims” regarding “Coronil” being a cure for COVID-19, despite the product only being licensed as an “immuno-booster.”
Multiple residents’ doctors’ associations from prestigious medical institutions, including All India Institutes of Medical Sciences and others, filed the High Court suit against Ramdev, alleging a misinformation campaign that aimed to promote the sale of his products as alternative treatments for COVID-19.
On October 27, 2021, the High Court had issued a summons to Ramdev, asserting that the allegations placed against him warranted serious consideration and that there was sufficient basis for the lawsuit’s continuation.
