PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Cricket West Indies (CWI) is taking proactive steps to enhance talent identification and development for cricket in the region. Recently, CWI director of cricket Miles Bascombe convened a crucial workshop with territorial talent identifiers during the West Indies Breakout League in Trinidad.
Spanning three days from May 8-10, this essential gathering drew together CWI’s network of Territorial Talent Identifiers alongside key High Performance and coaching personnel. The focus was on aligning evaluation methods and integration with the senior men’s team.
Participants engaged in comprehensive sessions led by senior men’s head coach Daren Sammy, along with high-performance manager Dwain Gill, senior talent manager Jamal Smith, and performance analyst Avenesh Seetaram.
Head Coach Daren Sammy commended CWI for this initiative, which aims to integrate international-level principles with regional practices. He stated: “This initiative allows our talent identifiers to gain insights into the high-level processes and data collection methods that are vital for filling specific roles within teams. The workshop equipped them with templates they can apply in their own territories, particularly concerning planning and tactical standards on the international stage.”
Miles Bascombe emphasized the workshop’s key goals: “We aimed to ensure that talent identifiers understand the selection processes that underpin talent identification and development. This workshop facilitated alignment in our depth charting process and involved their valuable input in creating a standardized player assessment model for systematic implementation.”
Sammy further underscored the importance of regional talent identifiers in the quest for international dominance: “With the expertise from our team, we demonstrated what is necessary to be competitive globally. We are using the regional level as a foundation to reclaim our position in international cricket.”
