District Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), D. Ghouse Desai, has called for urgent action to support local farmers by advocating for the procurement of their crops through A.P. Markfed and the establishment of necessary cold storage facilities.
On Wednesday, Mr. Desai led a delegation to assess standing onion crops in the Kurnool region. He urged farmers affected by recent adverse weather conditions to report their losses, particularly those struggling to sell their onion harvests.
Farmers reported that heavy rainfall across the State hindered their ability to store crops in warehouses or protect them adequately. In Gonegandla mandal, they expressed challenges in preserving their harvested onions and preparing them for sale, particularly after suffering damage to their groundnut crops. Additionally, they pointed out the burden of high land rentals and significant investments per acre.
Mr. Desai highlighted the disparity in onion pricing, noting that while market rates reach ₹5,000 per quintal, farmers are receiving far less from traders. He urged the immediate procurement of crops through Markfed to resolve this issue.
He also called for an immediate assessment of crop damage caused by heavy rains and demanded compensation for affected farmers. CPI(M) leaders warned of potential protests at the District Collectorate if farmers’ concerns are not addressed promptly.
