Bangkok authorities have arrested a couple implicated in the sale of counterfeit gold amulets, facing charges related to public fraud, computer crimes, and false advertising.
Police Major General Withaya Sriprasertparp, commander of the consumer protection unit, reported that the arrests occurred at the couple’s home in Bang Khen district on Monday.
The suspects, Kornkanok Suwannabut, 37, and her husband Kanpon Rueang-aram, 35, were taken into custody under arrest warrants issued by the Criminal Court on the same day.
Authorities allege that the couple engaged in public fraud, supplied false information through computer systems, and employed misleading advertising techniques that potentially misled consumers about the products’ authenticity.
The suspects were conveyed to the Crime Suppression Division for further questioning.
In addition to the arrests, consumer protection officials conducted a search of their K2N gold shop located on Hathairat Road in Khlong Sam Wa district.
The couple reportedly sold jewelry with lower gold content than claimed during social media livestreams, leading to consumer complaints regarding the inability to resell the items at other jewelry shops due to doubts about their gold content.
Recently, the Anti-Money Laundering Office announced an investigation into the couple’s finances to determine the source of their wealth.
