Congress Member of Parliament Vasant Chavan has sadly passed away on August 26, 2024, at a private hospital in Hyderabad following a prolonged illness, according to party sources.
Chavan, aged 69, passed away around 4 am after receiving treatment for renal issues over the past week.
Despite his declining health and significant party challenges, including the departure of former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan to the BJP, Vasant Chavan successfully won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in the recent elections.
Shortly after the Lok Sabha election results were announced, Vasant Chavan expressed gratitude towards Ashok Chavan for his party switch to the BJP.
In a competitive Lok Sabha election, Vasant Chavan emerged victorious against incumbent BJP MP Pratap Patil Chikhalikar by a margin of 59,442 votes, navigating the complexities of a weakened party and personal health adversities.
Born in Naigaon, Nanded district, Vasant Chavan had a long political career, beginning as a gram panchayat member and later serving as a zilla parishad member in 1990 and 2002.
He was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 2002 and served as a member of the state legislative assembly from the Naigaon constituency from 2009 to 2014.
Additionally, he chaired the Nanded District Central Cooperative Bank from 2021 to 2023.
