In a significant development for the Jammu and Kashmir region, local Congress and CPI (M) leaders expressed their support for the Election Commission’s announcement of assembly polls, emphasizing the community’s eagerness for democratic restoration.
The elections are scheduled to take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with the vote counting set for October 4.
Ravinder Sharma, senior vice-president of the Pradesh Congress Committee, commented, “Better late than never,” reflecting the populace’s anticipation for elections following the dissolution of the PDP-BJP government in June 2018.
Sharma highlighted the Congress party’s ongoing push for full statehood prior to the elections, while welcoming the recent announcement. He expressed hope that the Election Commission would ensure a fair electoral environment and adequate security for all participants.
The Congress leader also called for the Election Commission to monitor any recent changes within police and civil administrations in the region, stating, “There should be no unnecessary transfers, and if such occurrences are noted, the Election Commission should take appropriate action.”
M Y Tarigami, a prominent CPI (M) leader, echoed these sentiments, stating, “It is welcome that the Election Commission has finally announced the schedule for assembly elections. We also appreciate their commitment to a fair democratic process, ensuring security for both candidates and voters.”
