ECNETNews, September 26, 2024: Representatives from thirty-one nations, including Argentina, Canada, Guyana, and the United States, convened at the United Nations General Assembly to address the escalating crisis in Venezuela.
In a united statement, these governments reaffirmed their dedication to democratic values and human rights within Venezuela, commending the Venezuelan populace for their participation in the presidential election held on July 28, 2024, despite significant obstacles.
With over 12 million Venezuelans casting votes, the coalition emphasized the need to respect this democratic exercise. However, they expressed growing concern over the lack of transparency from Venezuela’s National Electoral Commission, noting that nearly two months have passed without independently verifiable election results, as must be provided by electoral regulations.
The statement also highlighted the alarming instances of repression, including arbitrary detentions and human rights abuses. The politically charged arrest warrant issued against opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia—who allegedly secured the highest number of votes—raises further international alarm, as he was forced to flee the country.
The countries involved called for the immediate release of individuals arbitrarily detained, the cessation of undue force and political violence, and for the Venezuelan people to be allowed to express their views without fear. They also demanded the return of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to Venezuela to ensure accountability and transparency.
Furthermore, the coalition insisted that Venezuela comply with international law, particularly by facilitating safe passage for six asylum seekers residing in the Argentine embassy.
The group urged Venezuela’s political leaders to pursue constructive dialogue aimed at resolving the ongoing political crisis and reinstating democratic institutions in alignment with the will of the Venezuelan people.
