A complaint has been filed against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, following her controversial remark about President Droupadi Murmu. The complaint, lodged by local lawyer Sudhir Ojha, seeks the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Gandhi for allegedly disrespecting the country’s highest constitutional authority.
Ojha also named Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as co-accused in the complaint, calling for legal action against them as well. “Sonia Gandhi has insulted President Murmu by referring to her as a ‘poor thing.’ This is a direct affront to the dignity of the office,” Ojha stated after submitting the complaint to the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Muzaffarpur. The court is set to hear the case on February 10.
The controversy erupted after President Murmu’s address to Parliament ahead of the Budget session, during which Sonia Gandhi commented to reporters, “The President was getting very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing,” seemingly critiquing the duration of the speech. Rahul Gandhi also described her speech as “boring” during the same interaction.
In response, Rashtrapati Bhavan issued a statement condemning the remarks as “unacceptable,” emphasizing that the President was not fatigued. The statement highlighted that comments made by prominent Congress leaders hurt the dignity of the president’s office and were therefore deemed inappropriate.
