There was chaos in the Ibule Soro Community of Ifedore Local Government Area in Ondo State as law enforcement officials reportedly disrupted the annual New Yam Festival, a significant cultural event marking the commencement of the yam-eating season.
During the festivities, police arrived and allegedly fired shots to disperse attendees, resulting in injuries as residents fled for their safety. This intervention led to a halt in both social and economic activities within the community.
Currently, the police presence remains noted in the area. A community member, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concern over the disruption of peace in Ibule Soro. “There has been a severe crisis since yesterday. The police invaded and shot randomly, causing panic across the community. Tear gas was deployed, affecting many, including the elderly. Several individuals were hospitalized as a result of this situation,” he stated.
In response, the state Police Public Relations Officer refuted claims of a police invasion, asserting that the forces intervened to maintain order amid ongoing internal conflicts within the town. “The Ibule community has been experiencing disputes for a while. We had previously urged the conflicting parties to seek resolution through legal channels. Unfortunately, the situation escalated, prompting police action to prevent a complete breakdown of order,” the officer explained.
The community remains divided regarding the festival’s timing. The traditional ruler, Oba Oluleke Ogunlade, scheduled the festival for August 25 to align with the anniversary of his coronation. However, a faction opposed to his leadership insisted on celebrating on the traditional date, which fell on Friday, leading to tensions during the observance of this important cultural event.
