Release – The Commonwealth Secretary-General is set to embark on her inaugural official visit to Pakistan from July 28 to August 2, 2024, following an invitation from the Government of Pakistan.
During this five-day visit, the Secretary-General will engage with Pakistan’s leadership, cabinet members, youth leaders, civil society representatives, and various stakeholders to foster collaboration and shared goals.
A strong proponent of aiding Pakistan in combating the challenges posed by climate change, the Secretary-General will express her solidarity as the nation commemorates the second anniversary of the devastating 2022 floods. These floods affected one-third of the country and resulted in over $30 billion in damages. A tour of the flood-impacted areas is also anticipated.
The agenda for the visit will include discussions on enhancing cooperation between Pakistan and the Commonwealth in key sectors, such as national development strategies, youth empowerment, and trade and investment opportunities.
With 2023/24 designated as the ‘Year of Youth’ by the Commonwealth and Pakistan chairing the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting, the Secretary-General will receive in-depth briefings on the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, emphasizing the benefits that Commonwealth membership offers to young individuals.
As a founding member of the Commonwealth, Pakistan recognizes the organization as a vital platform for addressing global challenges. The upcoming visit by the Secretary-General presents a significant opportunity to further strengthen the enduring partnership between Pakistan and the Commonwealth.
