The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Ido Ekiti, Prof. Ebenezer Ajayi, has called on medical professionals who have sought opportunities abroad to rethink their contributions to Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Ajayi emphasized the importance of not forgetting their roots and the necessity of improving the health sector in Nigeria for the benefit of their fellow citizens. His remarks came during a gathering in Ido Ekiti, coinciding with the 2024 Christmas Carol Service and an awards ceremony honoring exceptional staff.
Addressing the issue of healthcare workers leaving the country, often referred to as the ‘Japa syndrome’, Ajayi stated, “While many have traveled abroad, it is crucial that they either return or support the development of Nigeria’s healthcare system from wherever they may be located.”
He added, “Contributing to healthcare is not solely about being present; there are numerous ways to make an impact remotely.” His message reiterated the importance of remaining connected to their homeland, their training, and the healthcare needs of the population.
Prof. Ajayi expressed satisfaction with the hospital’s ongoing achievements in enhancing healthcare delivery and urged staff to maintain their dedication. The annual Christmas Carol Service serves not only as a moment of gratitude for the staff’s well-being but also a celebration of the past year’s accomplishments, complemented by the recognition of outstanding staff members.
“This hospital has a rich history spanning 27 years, and we are honoring those who have consistently delivered quality service to our community,” Ajayi remarked, highlighting that 40 staff members will be recognized for their commitment and 18 for their individual excellence, acknowledging their extraordinary contributions that ensure patient satisfaction.
This marks the seventh edition of the awards, which aim to motivate employees by acknowledging their hard work and encouraging further commitment to the hospital’s mission and values.
Mrs. Foluso Adelegan, the Director of Administration at FETHI, praised the CMD for his strong leadership, which has led to significant developments at the institution. She urged staff to remain diligent in their roles and work collaboratively towards enhancing the hospital’s vision and core values for the benefit of patients.
