In a poignant display of solidarity, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk visited farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for over a month advocating for the rights of farmers, at the Khanauri border demonstration site on December 28, 2024.
Wangchuk met with Dallewal (70) alongside other leaders from the farmers’ unions currently leading the protests.
Following the meeting, Wangchuk expressed his intent to offer support on behalf of the people of Ladakh, emphasizing the importance of the farmers’ struggle. He noted that Dallewal could only speak in whispers due to his prolonged fasting, and the visit was not about extensive dialogue but rather about extending heartfelt support.
Wangchuk urged the public to empathize with the farmers, reminding audiences that “the food we eat is produced by the farmers.”
Dallewal’s indefinite hunger strike reached its 33rd day on the same date. Farmers continue to protest for several demands, including a legal assurance for a Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Under the banners of local farmer unions, they have been demonstrating at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, after being halted by security forces during their attempt to march to Delhi.
A group of 101 farmers has attempted to march on foot to Delhi three times between December 6 and 14, but were met with resistance from security personnel.
