Researchers from Mongolia and China are set to collaborate on creating a geographical information system specifically designed to monitor and protect the habitat of the critically endangered Mazaalai, or Gobi Bear, within the Great Gobi Strictly Prohibited Area.
This initiative aligns with the renewed partnership under the “Technical Assistance in the Protection of Gobi Bears” project, originally established by an agreement between the two nations in 2018. The recent extension of this agreement is expected to enhance research initiatives focused on habitat improvement, population growth, and the overall conservation of the Mazaalai.
Recent reports indicate that the population of Mongolia’s Gobi bears has now surpassed 50 individuals, a remarkable recovery from just 36 bears recorded in 2018, as noted by the Institute of General and Experimental Biology at the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. This positive trend highlights the importance of continued collaboration and effective conservation strategies to ensure the survival of this unique species.
