CHIANG RAI: Authorities have launched an investigation into the **Cherntawan International Meditation Centre** in Muang district, run by prominent preacher Phra Maha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi, amid allegations of **forest land encroachment**.
The investigation, led by police and forestry officials, commenced on Monday in response to media claims that the centre has illegally expanded its premises. The centre is situated within the Doi Pui National Forest Reserve.
Phra Maha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi was unavailable for comment as he is currently on a meditation trip in Japan with no immediate plans to return to Thailand.
Initially, the Vimuttayalai Foundation secured permission from forestry authorities to establish the centre on 113 rai of land, which was later expanded to 143 rai with additional approvals. However, it has come to light that the actual area in use may exceed 190 rai, potentially encroaching upon 47 rai of protected national forest.
The investigation is expected to last 3-4 days, with authorities committing to provide daily updates to the public. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Chalermchai Sri-on has set a seven-day deadline for the preliminary fact-finding efforts.
If evidence supports the claims of encroachment, the Royal Forest Department may pursue charges against the meditation centre under the National Forest Reserve Act. Should intentional encroachment be substantiated, measures could include suspension of land use and demolition of any structures built illegally.
Phra Maha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi has faced criticism recently after video clips surfaced showing him inappropriately addressing individuals involved in a scam, leading to allegations of promoting wealth accumulation contrary to traditional clerical teachings.
