ECNETNews, Houston, TX, Fri. August 23, 2024: Renowned James Beard-nominated chef Tristen Epps is set to debut an innovative Afro-Caribbean dining concept in Houston, Texas. The anticipated restaurant, named Buboy, will feature a tasting menu that celebrates Afro-Caribbean flavors and is slated to open in 2025. This initiative highlights the increasing acknowledgment of Black culinary talents in the U.S., reflecting a trend where chefs are proudly showcasing dishes inspired by their rich cultural heritages.
Chef Epps, whose roots trace back to Trinidad, cultivated his culinary passion during formative years of global travel with his mother, a military service member. His exposure to diverse cuisines in places like Guam, Japan, and the Philippines laid the foundation for his dedication to exploring international flavors. Over the years, Epps has garnered experience across the United States and abroad, continually broadening his culinary perspective.
With a Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts and Food & Beverage Industry Management from Johnson & Wales University, Epps perfected his craft through a rigorous apprenticeship at The Greenbrier under acclaimed AFC Certified Master Chef Richard Rosendale. His career has spanned significant positions in renowned restaurants nationwide, and his talents were recognized in 2014 when he competed on national television, capturing the attention of notable chef Marcus Samuelsson. Samuelsson’s mentorship led Epps to work at Red Rooster in Harlem, New York, and engage in diverse culinary projects globally.
As Executive Chef at Red Rooster Miami, Epps earned Michelin recognition, contributing to the restaurant being named one of the Top 12 Best New Restaurants in the World. His individual accolades include a Rising Star Chef title by Star Chefs of America in 2021 and being listed among Miami’s Top 20 Under 40 Most Professional in 2022, in addition to 40 Under 40 Black Professionals recognition in 2023.
Currently, Epps oversees the culinary program at Eden Roc Hotel in South Beach, where his restaurant, Ocean Social by Tristen Epps, recently earned him a James Beard Semi-Finalist nomination for Best Chef South in 2024.
As a respected leader in the culinary community, Epps is committed to nurturing creativity and empowering aspiring chefs. His advocacy for underrepresented voices in the culinary world aims to amplify the significance of Black diaspora cuisine and its impact on American food traditions.
