Charlie Edwards Claims European Bantamweight Title with Unanimous Decision Win Against Thomas Essomba
In an intense match at York Hall in London, Charlie Edwards emerged victorious against Thomas Essomba, securing the European bantamweight title. The judges scored the bout 118-111, 117-111, and 116-112 in favor of Edwards, who demonstrated exceptional skill throughout the fight.
Despite facing pressure from Essomba, who is a Cameroonian Olympian, Edwards maintained his composure. The contest became particularly complex as Essomba’s team included Edwards’ own brother, former world champion Sunny Edwards, who was in his opponent’s corner.
Edwards showcased his agility and quick footwork, adeptly maneuvering to avoid Essomba’s strong shots while responding with a solid offensive strategy, including a powerful triple jab. While the bout was competitive, Edwards consistently navigated through the challenges posed by Essomba, demonstrating why he is a former world champion at flyweight.
Following his victory, Edwards expressed a desire for a rematch with former gym teammate Paul Butler, indicating that he is also targeting a future world title fight. “Thomas is a tricky operator,” he remarked, adding that his win places him in a favorable position with numerous options ahead.
Promoter Kalle Sauerland highlighted Edwards’ achievements, stating, “Tonight, European champion, back on the way to the world title. That’s where he belongs.” With this win, Edwards has set his sights on further accomplishments in the boxing world.
