Charley Hull Impresses at HSBC Women’s World Championship with Bogey-Free Round
Charley Hull showcased her skills amid challenging windy conditions, making a remarkable bogey-free start at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore. The English golfer secured three birdies during her opening round of 69, placing her just one shot behind the leader at Sentosa Golf Club. A Lim Kim set the early pace with a score of four-under 68.
Despite missing opportunities on the four par-fives, Hull recorded birdies on the third, 10th, and 14th holes, finishing the day in second place. Notably, only 13 out of 66 competitors managed to finish under par on the opening day.
“I just felt like I played pretty solid,” Hull remarked following her round. “You have to judge your yardages very well. The greens are firm, so you accept hitting 30 feet away from the pin.”
Kim, leading the board, combined five birdies with a single bogey on the par-five 16th hole, while Australia’s Minjee Lee and China’s Ruoning Yin are tied for third at two-under par.
Lee commented on her performance, saying, “It was a bit up-and-down. I started with a birdie but hit a few loose drives here and there, putting myself in challenging positions. I scrambled well, making several up-and-downs.”
Hye-Jin Choi and Gaby Lopez are also within two strokes of the lead, while world No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul and world No. 3 Lydia Ko, the highest-ranked players in the tournament, both ended their first round at one-under 71.
Former world No. 1 Jin-Young Ko, pursuing her third victory at the event, began her campaign with a round of 73. Meanwhile, Ireland’s Leona Maguire and defending champion Hannah Green both finished the opening round with scores of 75.
The HSBC Women’s Championship marks the second event in a three-week Asian Swing on the LPGA Tour, with many eyes on the tournament. Live coverage will continue throughout the week.
