Celtic Strengthens Defense with Signing of Auston Trusty for £6 Million
Celtic has officially welcomed defender Auston Trusty into their ranks from Sheffield United in a significant transfer deal valued at £6 million. The USA international, who is versatile enough to play both left-back and centre-back, has committed to a five-year contract with the Scottish Premiership champions.
At 26 years old, Trusty began his football journey in Major League Soccer with the Philadelphia Union and Colorado Rapids, later gaining experience while on loan at Birmingham City. He joined Sheffield United in 2023, where he made an impressive 32 Premier League appearances last season.
Expressing his excitement, Trusty stated, “I feel ecstatic. This is such a historic and amazing club, one I’ve known about since childhood. Growing up in Philadelphia, football wasn’t the most popular sport, but I always recognized the significance of Celtic. Joining this massive organization feels like a dream come true.”
Trusty further shared his eagerness to contribute to the team, noting that the manager believes in his potential and is committed to fostering an environment where he can excel.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expressed his enthusiasm about the new addition: “We are thrilled to sign Auston. He is a fast, strong, and athletic defender with considerable experience and a proven track record at the international level.”
In addition to Trusty’s signing, Rodgers is looking to add Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels in a club-record deal valued at £11 million, following previous bids that were turned down. Engels, who had a solid performance with three goals and two assists in 33 appearances last season, is strategically seen as a replacement for Matt O’Riley after his transfer to Brighton.
The club is also considering bolstering their squad further with Dundee captain Luke McCowan, reflecting an ongoing commitment to enhancing team depth and performance ahead of the upcoming season.
