Authorities are intensifying their probe into a suspected online business scam involving the recruitment of celebrities to promote products. The situation has garnered significant attention on social media, particularly after a prominent news anchor implied a scandal linked to a popular direct sales company that reportedly utilizes famous Thai figures to attract investors.
Numerous individuals have come forward, claiming they did not receive the products or returns that were promised. In response to the growing concerns, a senior police official announced that the national police chief has delegated oversight of two major cases. One involves an alleged gold scam tied to Kornkanok Suwannabut and her spouse, while the other focuses on The Icon Group, a direct sales business known for enlisting high-profile celebrities.
This week, the Consumer Protection Police Division seized luxury vehicles valued at 120 million from the couple accused of fraudulent activities. The police have established a dedicated center to handle complaints from victims of the scam.
As the investigation into celebrity involvement continues, legal measures will be taken where warranted. The business under scrutiny specializes in health supplements and has featured well-known personalities in its marketing strategies.
Registered with the Office of the Consumer Protection Board in 2019, the company’s application for direct sales status in 2020 was denied. Since then, 15 complaints have been logged from individuals who invested in products but failed to sell them.
The investigation will also assess whether marketing tactics by influencers were misleading. Should violations be uncovered, the award conferred on the company’s CEO for Consumer Protection Day in 2022 may be rescinded.
Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau officials have noted the potential for prosecution against several celebrities involved in this case.
