Statement on Caribbean Wellness Day 2024 – Caribbean Wellness Day (CWD) serves as a vital initiative aimed at enhancing awareness and driving action among CARICOM Member States to combat the rising issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which continue to significantly affect the health, economy, and development of the Caribbean region.
This year, Caribbean Wellness Day will take place on Saturday, 14 September 2024. The theme for this celebration will be Power Through Collective Action: Good Health is Our Right.
The phrase “Your health is your wealth” resonates universally, underlining the fundamental truth that no one can fully enjoy life without good health. It is with great concern that we acknowledge the ongoing struggles faced by millions worldwide in achieving this essential state of well-being.
In the Caribbean, we encounter a pressing challenge as we bear the highest burden from NCDs among developing nations in the Americas. Chronic diseases—including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes—are not mere health complications; they are the leading causes of death, accounting for over 70% of fatalities in our region. Nevertheless, we possess the resilience to overcome this daunting threat. In 2007, Caribbean leaders established the second Saturday in September as Caribbean Wellness Day, symbolizing our commitment—united in the fight against the epidemic of chronic NCDs.
The core philosophy at ECNETNews emphasizes regional collaboration. Addressing this health crisis requires a comprehensive “whole of society” approach that unites all sectors: the private industry, government bodies, manufacturers, academia, NGOs, professional associations, community organizations, faith groups, civil society, and individuals. Each sector plays a critical role, from advocating for policy changes to promoting healthier lifestyles within communities.
For the fifth consecutive year, including 2024, the central theme for Caribbean Wellness Day is Power through Collective Action. This overarching theme is complemented by the 2024 subtheme: “Good Health is Our Right.”
