– COP16 to the UNCCD Scheduled for December
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Key representatives from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) convened at a regional preparatory meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This gathering sets the stage for the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16), slated for December.
The meeting serves as a vital platform for member countries to exchange insights and engage in discussions regarding critical issues leading up to the COP16.
“These sessions will cover critical COP Decisions that require endorsement, alongside presentations from the UNCCD secretariat, the Global Mechanism, Civil Society Organizations, and insights from the host nation, Saudi Arabia, regarding preparations for the upcoming conference. Over two days, participants will focus on issues uniquely impacting the Caribbean region,” stated the Partnership Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM).
“Focal Points are committed to establishing a unified stance on pressing regional challenges, particularly concerning droughts and sand and dust storms, to ensure these issues are documented and featured in the final statement of the Latin America and Caribbean group. The region is also aiming to secure representation on various governing bodies associated with the Convention,” PISLM added.
The PISLM for Caribbean Small Island Developing States (CSIDS) functions as the sole intergovernmental organization dedicated to assisting nations in fulfilling their commitments under the UNCCD and addressing land and soil management as outlined in the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA).
