ECNETNews, New York, NY, August 8, 2024: Caribbean athletes from six nations have brought pride to the region and its Diaspora by winning 16 medals so far at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Cuba and Jamaica are currently leading the medal standings, each with five medals. Cuba’s tally includes two golds, one silver, and two bronze medals. Notably, Erislandy Alvarez Borges captured gold in the Men’s 63.5kg boxing event, while Mijain Lopez Nunez triumphed in the Men’s Greco-Roman 130kg wrestling. Gabriel Alejandro Rosillo Kindelan earned bronze in the Men’s Greco-Roman 97kg category, and Arlen Lopez Cardona brought home another bronze in the Men’s 80kg boxing. Yusneylis Guzman Lopez stands out as Cuba’s sole female medalist thus far, securing a silver in the Women’s Freestyle 50kg swimming event.
Jamaica achieved its first gold medal on August 7, thanks to Roje Stona’s remarkable performance in the Men’s Discus Throw. The country also boasts silver medals won by Kishane Thompson in the Men’s 100m, Wayne Pinnock in the Men’s Long Jump, and Shanieka Ricketts in the Women’s Triple Jump. Rajindra Campbell contributed a bronze to Jamaica’s medal count in the Men’s Shot Put.
St. Lucia celebrated a historic milestone with its first-ever Olympic medals, both secured by Julien Alfred. She finished first in the Women’s 100m, earning the title of World’s Fastest Woman, and claimed silver in the Women’s 200m race.
Dominica made history by winning its first Olympic medal, a gold secured by Thea La Fond in the Women’s Triple Jump.
The Dominican Republic garnered bronze medals through Yunior Alcantara Reyes in the Men’s 51kg boxing event and Cristian Javier Pinales in the Men’s 80kg boxing event.
Grenada’s Lindon Victor claimed the nation’s only medal thus far, a bronze in the Men’s Decathlon.
