ECNETNews, New York, NY, October 21, 2024: Caribbean icons Julien Alfred from St. Lucia and Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic have been nominated for the esteemed 2024 World Athletics Women’s Track Athlete of the Year award, showcasing their remarkable achievements in track and field.
Alfred and Paulino will compete against prominent athletes including Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet, the Olympic champion in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, and Faith Kipyegon, who garnered Olympic gold in the 1,500 meters. The U.S. is represented by Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the Olympic champion in the 400-meter hurdles, and Gabby Thomas, the 200-meter Olympic champion, rounding out the highly competitive field.
At only 23 years old, Julien Alfred has made waves this year, capturing gold in the 100 meters and silver in the 200 meters at the Paris Olympics, as well as securing the World Indoor 60-meter title. She concluded her stellar season by winning the 100-meter event at the Wanda Diamond League.
Similarly, Marileidy Paulino, 27, has remained undefeated in 2024 in the women’s 400 meters, clinching gold at the Paris Olympics and triumphing at the Wanda Diamond League as well.
In the men’s category, American athletes Rai Benjamin, Grant Holloway, and Noah Lyles are among those nominated, alongside Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen for the Men’s Track Athlete of the Year award.
The winners of the awards will be determined by public voting, which will take place on social media until voting concludes on October 27, 2024.
