ECNETNews, August 10, 2024: The Caribbean has wrapped up the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with a remarkable total of 23 medals, igniting pride among sports enthusiasts throughout the region and its global communities. Athletes from seven Caribbean nations displayed outstanding performances, contributing significantly to this impressive medal count.
Cuba led the charge with eight medals, including two golds, one silver, and five bronzes. Erislandy Alvarez Borges triumphed with gold in the Men’s 63.5kg boxing division, while Mijain Lopez Nunez secured gold in Men’s Greco-Roman 130kg wrestling. Additional medals for Cuba included bronze from Gabriel Alejandro Rosillo Kindelan in Men’s Greco-Roman 97kg wrestling and Arlen Lopez Cardona in Men’s 80kg boxing, among others.
Jamaica closely followed with six medals, highlighted by Roje Stona’s gold in the Men’s Discus Throw on August 7. The nation also celebrated silver medals from Kishane Thompson in the Men’s 100m and Wayne Pinnock in the Men’s Long Jump, alongside bronzes won by Rajindra Campbell in the Men’s Shot Put and Rasheed Broadbell in the Men’s 110m Hurdles.
St. Lucia made headlines by winning its inaugural Olympic medals, both achieved by Julien Alfred. She captured gold in the Women’s 100m, earning the title of World’s Fastest Woman, and followed with silver in the Women’s 200m.
Dominica also celebrated its first Olympic medal— a gold from Thea LaFond in the Women’s Triple Jump. The Dominican Republic had a successful showing, with Marileidy Paulino winning gold in the Women’s 400m, complemented by bronze medals from Yunior Alcantara Reyes and Cristian Javier Pinales in boxing events.
Grenada added to the medal tally with two bronzes from Lindon Victor in the Men’s Decathlon and Anderson Peters in the Men’s Javelin Throw. Additionally, Puerto Rico contributed a bronze courtesy of Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the Women’s 100m Hurdles.
