Capcom’s long-awaited sequel to the beloved game Okami has officially been announced, rekindling interest in the franchise nearly two decades after its initial release. Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi highlighted the uniqueness of the IP and the importance of having the right team in place to develop the new installment.
During a recent discussion, Hirabayashi shared insights into the development of Okami 2 alongside game director Hideki Kamiya, who has expressed a longstanding desire to continue the story of the original game. “But for Capcom, we were always looking for the opportunity to create a new Okami,” Hirabayashi stated, emphasizing the careful planning required to bring this project to fruition.
Kamiya, who departed from Platinum Games earlier this year, reiterated his commitment to completing the narrative left open in the original Okami. Despite achieving critical acclaim, the original game was viewed as a commercial disappointment, leading to the closure of the internal developer Clover shortly after its launch. However, Capcom demonstrated its belief in the franchise with the release of Okamiden for the Nintendo DS in 2010.
Hirabayashi noted the continued interest in Okami, stating, “People are still enjoying this game, just from the numbers.” He pointed out that, unlike typical trends in video game sales, Okami has maintained a steady influx of new players, solidifying its status as a distinctive property within Capcom’s portfolio.
In addition to Okami, Capcom is actively exploring the revival of other long-dormant franchises. The recent announcement of Onimusha: Way of the Sword and the upcoming remaster of Onimusha 2 further illustrate Capcom’s commitment to bringing beloved titles back into the spotlight. Fans can anticipate more exciting developments as the company focuses on revitalizing its classic games.
