In a significant boost for her presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that her campaign has raised an impressive $540 million to challenge Republican nominee Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
The momentum of the campaign surged following President Joe Biden’s endorsement of Harris after he concluded his own campaign. A notable spike in donations occurred during last week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, accepted their nominations.
“Just before Vice President Harris’ acceptance speech Thursday evening, we officially surpassed the $500 million threshold,” stated the campaign chair in a memo issued on Sunday. “Following her speech, we experienced our most successful fundraising hour since the campaign’s inception.”
While Trump remains a strong competitor in fundraising efforts, he appears to be significantly trailing Harris’ campaign, which is just a month old. Trump’s campaign reported raising $138.7 million in July, a figure that falls short of Harris’s opening week donations. Additionally, Trump’s campaign disclosed that it had $327 million in cash available at the beginning of August.
The remarkable fundraising success for Harris comes from contributions to her campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and various joint fundraising initiatives.
The campaign chair noted that nearly one-third of the donations received during the convention week were made by first-time contributors. Among these newcomers, approximately one-fifth were young voters, and two-thirds were women—demographics that are crucial for Harris’s success in the upcoming election.
Additionally, the Harris campaign has witnessed a considerable increase in volunteer engagement. During the convention week, supporters committed to nearly 200,000 volunteer shifts, further demonstrating the campaign’s growing grassroots support.
