In an unprecedented matchup, Sam and Tom Burgess are set to face off as Warrington Wolves clash with Huddersfield Giants in the opening round of the Super League. This encounter marks the first time in their professional careers that the Burgess brothers will compete against each other, with Sam serving as head coach for the Wolves and Tom making his debut for the Giants in 2025.
Previously, the brothers played together at South Sydney Rabbitohs alongside their siblings George and Luke. However, this Sunday will be a historic moment as they go head-to-head on the field. Sam revealed he made an attempt to recruit Tom to Warrington, but his brother declined the offer.
“We did try to recruit him, but we were tight on the salary cap. His presence will undoubtedly enhance the Super League,” said Sam Burgess. He expressed excitement about the opening round, mentioning family and friends in attendance. “He will add a wealth of experience with over 250 NRL games, plus his significant contributions at Huddersfield and international play.”
Tom Burgess, while not joining his brother’s team, is eager for the challenge against Warrington. “It’s great to be back in Huddersfield, and there’s no better way to begin the season than facing my brother,” he stated, recognizing the talent and leadership Sam has brought to his coaching role.
The rivalry adds an intriguing layer as Warrington, one of the favorites heading into the 2025 season, aims to secure a win against Huddersfield, who are looking to bounce back after a difficult 2024 campaign.
“I am really proud of him. This was his path, and he has achieved it now,” said Tom, reflecting on Sam’s successful coaching debut. The much-anticipated game between Warrington Wolves and Huddersfield Giants will take place on Sunday, February 16.
