ECNETNews, BROOKLYN, NY, Mon. Sept. 2, 2024: The West Indian American Day Carnival parade kicked off successfully today until an unexpected act of violence disrupted the festivities, according to New York police.
The afternoon celebration, which is part of the 57th annual carnival honoring Caribbean culture, was marred by a shooting incident on the 300 block of Eastern Parkway at approximately 2:35 p.m. EST. NYPD reported that five individuals were shot near Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights around 2:45 p.m. EST, with two victims in critical condition while the remaining three sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities stated that the shooting was carried out by a lone male suspect described as standing between 6’2″ and 6’3″ with a slim build, wearing a bandana and brown shirt. The suspect fled westward on Eastern Parkway towards Classon Avenue. Police are urging anyone with video footage of the shooting to come forward to assist in the investigation.
NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell confirmed that this was an isolated incident, emphasizing that there are no additional threats to the public in the area. “This was an intentional act by one person toward a group of people,” he stated.
The annual carnival, celebrating Caribbean heritage, is organized by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association and draws large crowds to Brooklyn. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed his sorrow over the shooting, stating, “Every American should be able to celebrate their heritage without the threat of gun violence.” He called for action to address gun violence in the community and beyond.
CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL IN NEW YORK
The Caribbean Carnival in New York City has its origins in the 1930s, when early celebrations were held indoors due to winter weather. Over the decades, the tradition evolved, with the first known street parade occurring in the 1940s. The carnival has since grown into one of the largest celebrations of Caribbean culture in the world, bringing together millions in a vibrant display of music, dance, and community spirit.
